(This was written while sitting at Bay 120 Cafe, AKA Cargo, on Staten Island, NYC at 12:30 AM last Monday morning… I just found this and made quick edits for it to make some sense of this ramblefest.)
My teams lose… Expect for that glorious time when they win.
I’ve forever been a fan of the forgotten teams/sports. Other than the New York Football Giants recently, the Mets, Nets and Red Bulls have conditioned me to expect the worst and embrace the marginally best.
But on Sunday, October 27, 2013, the best was truly the best.
Former MetroStar/Red Bull Mike Magee scored the opener three minutes in because, of course, he had to. There’s narratives to be followed.
But then… Thierry Henry.
The best player to ever play in MLS player.
The man who has showed me more talent, skill, “I just don’t give a fuckness” and spectacular play on a soccer field than I’ve ever seen live, reaches into his bag of tricks and pulled out another moment of brilliance. (Hey, watch it: http://youtu.be/HKkrjgoCROM)
Was this about to be the new narrative? There was only one man who needed to be heard from for it to be completed.
The DP who has been, “hard-working/the heart and soul”, and just an amazing, skillful talent, scored the go-ahead goal and on crazy scramble where the only thing the
Australia knew was that he had the final “touch” that sent the South Ward and the rest of Red Bull Arena into delirium. (OK, so it was actually Ibrahim Sekagya who got the goal. THAT’S NOT THE POINT HERE! http://youtu.be/QjrtBApTAb4)
From then on… It. Was. A. Celebration. (http://youtu.be/hGlkzryn7Zk)
Goals on goals on goals. Look here, there were a lot of them: http://youtu.be/VZe7HLS1Tw4
Mothers who had brought their daughters. Fathers who had brought their sons. All of the other possible combinations of people who had introduced the sport of soccer to others over the last 30 years in the NYC/NJ arena…
Side note: “_____ years, no cups.”
A familiar phrase from a fan base just slightly south in distance, but further south than Orlando culturally and also makes the playoffs 25% of their existence likes to say.
This is for…
Those from 1996.
The one’s who were soccer fans before it was truly a thing in the 21st century. (Those original Cosmos fans. Shouts to Mark Fishkin.)
Those who got sucked into the 1994 World Cup (Like me… Even those where the 2002, 2006 or 2010 did it).
The one’s where Red Bull Arena did it.
The one’s who remember Red Bull Park.
Or 60-90 days.
Those way before me.
And those after me.
Any reason for getting on board is fine.
But for those who had tears in their eyes tonight…
This is for you.
The New York Red Bulls, the team also known as the NY/NJ Metrostars have finally won a North American trophy.
And there’s more to win.
How sweet it is.
